His life took a drastic turn while playing hockey for a Canadian Junior team.
On December 18th, 1988 he was hit from behind driving him head first into the boards. This injury left him a complete C-6 Quadriplegic.
His first two days were frightening as there was no sign of function from the neck down. The injury fractured the fourth and fifth vertebrae while crushing the sixth. There was no surgery in the beginning instead they opted for a halo vest and traction. On the third day he started to show some recovery in motor skills. He vowed to himself he would be independent again. Only a few weeks had passed when he started to show his true determination. He actually started to lift weights while still in traction and confined to bed. This was only the beginning of a long rehabilitation process; let alone the many unforeseen changes in his life that were still waiting ahead.
Paul doesn’t like to take much credit for all the hard work he has put in. However, you can see it in the person he has become and the accomplishments he has achieved.

Paul has continued to grow as an artist since the original injury, and many subsequent issues over the years.
Using mostly mixed media such as Cante’, watercolor, and acrylic’s just to name a few. His works are not conventional but expressive. “I try to do work to evoke and emotional response from people rather than doing something picture perfect.”
Paul’s work had been on display in several different locations.
The Vancouver Exhibition Hall in British Columbia
Harrison Street Gallery at the Seattle Center
The Karshner Museum in Puyallup
Seattle Pacific University
Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood
Everett Community College
Seattle Central Community College
Mercer View Community Center on Mercer Island

After many years away and multiple sugeries; Paul is getting back to the drawing table. He has since added digital media; and is exploring the possibility of metal sculpture and other new mediums. His current goal is reentry into the arts, while continuing his rehabilitation at home.
"I actually have a few goals; 1st is to physically build myself backup to as close to where I was Prior to 2014."
"2nd is to Recreate myself as an artist; my faith, and my art were what helped me through those four years.
I did alot of writing and artwork while lying in those hospital beds. It was my way of escaping, it really did help me get through it all."
"3rd is just to continue to learn and grow. Not only as an artist, but as a person as well."
Whatever challenge he decides to take on, most who know him realize he’ll find some way to succeed.
